Stocks Mixed Thursday Morning; New Unemployment Claims of 1.31 Million Last Week

Stocks on the Move

Carnival Corp (CCL), Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL) and Freeport-McMoRan Inc (FCX) are moving higher this morning, while Nucor Corporation (NUE), Carrier Global Corp (CARR) and Alaska Air Group, Inc. (ALK) are headed lower. Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) and Six Flags Entertainment Corp (SIX) were upgraded by analysts this morning, while Bank of America Corp (BAC), Square Inc (SQ) and SeaWorld Entertainment Inc (SEAS) were downgraded.

International Markets


Stocks in Asia are up. The Shanghai SE Composite Index is up 1.39%, the Mumbai Sensex is up 1.12%, the Australia ASX All Ordinaries is up 0.67% the Hang Seng is up 0.46% and the Nikkei 225 is up 0.4%. In Europe stocks are mixed. The DAX is up 1.51%, the Euro Stoxx 50 is up 0.66%, the CAC 40 is up 0.24% and the FTSE 100 is down -0.47%.

Futures and Currencies

Energy futures are mixed today. The price for West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down -0.1 at 40.8 per barrel. Brent crude is up 0.06 at 43.35 per barrel. Natural Gas is up 0.05 at 1.87. Precious metals are mixed this morning. Gold is down -0.3 at 1808.59 per ounce. Platinum is up 6.48 at 857 while silver is up 0.15 at 19.32. The dollar is mixed compared to the major currencies today. The greenback is down against the euro, up against the Yen and down against the Pound.

Put/Call Ratio

Yesterday, 1,511,700 call contracts traded on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) compared to 605,084 put contracts. The single-session put/call ratio was 0.4.

Cryptocurrency news

The shares of bitcoin mining companies on Wednesday got slammed, and are on track to post a third straight decline as prices of the most prominent cryptocurrency and the broader virtual-asset market slumps. At last check, shares of bitcoin miner Riot Blockchain Inc. (RIOT) were down by about 14%, while rival Marathon Patent Group Inc. (MARA) was seeing its shares down 17% in Wednesday midday trading. The three-session slide for both companies comes as bitcoins on CoinDesk were down 7.2% so far this week, and valued at $34,096 on Wednesday. The slump in bitcoins comes as incoming President Joe Biden's nominee for Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, during a Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday suggested curtailing the use of cryptos, which she said are prone to be used for malfeasance. The S&P 500 futures trade 25 points, or 0.7%, above fair value at around the 3720 level after President Trump signed the $900 billion stimulus and omnibus bill that funds the government through Sept. 30. The House will vote today to raise stimulus checks to $2000, but it's not likely to get 60 votes needed to pass in the Senate, which means the stimulus checks will remain at $600 for now. Recall, the stimulus/funding bills were originally passed by Congress last week, but President Trump wavered in signing it because he wanted $2000 stimulus checks. Separately, holiday retail sales excluding automotive and gasoline increased 3.0% yr/yr this expanded holiday season (Oct. 11-Dec. 24) with online sales up 49.0% compared to 2019. No other economic data will be released today. U.S. Treasuries have edged lower, pushing yields higher. The 2-yr yield is up one basis point to 0.13%, and the 10-yr yield is up two basis points to 0.96%. The U.S. Dollar Index is little changed at 90.29....
