 Earnings and fiscal stimulus talks negating China and virus concerns
The S&P 500 futures trade eight points, or 0.2%, above fair value, helped by another round of better-than-expected earnings reports and progress on fiscal stimulus negotiations. 
Granted, Microsoft (MSFT 208.51, -3.24, -1.5%) did exceed expectations, but shares are down 1.5% in pre-market action after the stock rallied 4.4% heading into its report this week. Tesla (TSLA 1640.02, +47.89, +3.0%) and Twitter (TWTR 39.15, +2.21, +6.0%) are some notable companies trading higher after earnings. 
In Washington, the White House and Senate Republicans agreed to a $1 trillion stimulus package that includes money for testing, schools, and additional stimulus checks. As reported yesterday, Republicans are also floating the idea of a short-term extension of enhanced unemployment benefits, which are set to expire at the end of the month. 
On the data front, investors will receive the weekly Initial Claims (Briefing.com consensus 1.285 million) and Continuing Claims report at 8:30 a.m. ET and the Conference Board's Leading Economic Index for June (Briefing.com consensus 2.1%) at 10:00 a.m. ET. 
U.S. Treasuries currently trade near their flat lines. The 2-yr yield is up two basis points to 0.15%, and the 10-yr yield is flat at 0.60%. The U.S. Dollar Index is down 0.1% to 94.92. WTI crude is down 0.3% to $41.76/bbl.

  • Microsoft (MSFT 208.51, -3.24): -1.5% despite beating top and bottom-line estimates. The company said LinkedIn was hurt by weak job market and Search was hurt by lower ad spend.
  • Tesla (TSLA 1640.02, +47.89): +3.0% after beating top and bottom-line estimates and saying its target is still to deliver 500K vehicles in 2020. The company also confirmed that new Gigafactory will be built near Austin, Texas.
  • AT&T (T 30.48, +0.32): +1.1% after beating earnings estimates. 
  • Twitter (TWTR 39.15, +2.21): +6.0% after adding 20 mln average monetizable daily active users versus Q1. Twitte also missed top and bottom-line estimates. 
  • Dow Inc. (DOW 45.00, +0.66): +1.5% after beating revenue estimates, but it did miss earnings estimates.

The shares of bitcoin mining companies on Wednesday got slammed, and are on track to post a third straight decline as prices of the most prominent cryptocurrency and the broader virtual-asset market slumps. At last check, shares of bitcoin miner Riot Blockchain Inc. (RIOT) were down by about 14%, while rival Marathon Patent Group Inc. (MARA) was seeing its shares down 17% in Wednesday midday trading. The three-session slide for both companies comes as bitcoins on CoinDesk were down 7.2% so far this week, and valued at $34,096 on Wednesday. The slump in bitcoins comes as incoming President Joe Biden's nominee for Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, during a Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday suggested curtailing the use of cryptos, which she said are prone to be used for malfeasance. The S&P 500 futures trade 25 points, or 0.7%, above fair value at around the 3720 level after President Trump signed the $900 billion stimulus and omnibus bill that funds the government through Sept. 30. The House will vote today to raise stimulus checks to $2000, but it's not likely to get 60 votes needed to pass in the Senate, which means the stimulus checks will remain at $600 for now. Recall, the stimulus/funding bills were originally passed by Congress last week, but President Trump wavered in signing it because he wanted $2000 stimulus checks. Separately, holiday retail sales excluding automotive and gasoline increased 3.0% yr/yr this expanded holiday season (Oct. 11-Dec. 24) with online sales up 49.0% compared to 2019. No other economic data will be released today. U.S. Treasuries have edged lower, pushing yields higher. The 2-yr yield is up one basis point to 0.13%, and the 10-yr yield is up two basis points to 0.96%. The U.S. Dollar Index is little changed at 90.29....
