Morning Briefing - Building on yesterday's upward momentum
The S&P 500 futures trade 11 points, or 0.3%, above fair in a continuation trade from yesterday's buy-the-dip action. The benchmark index enters the session on a three-day losing streak that has cut its weekly gain to 0.2%.
Macro-related headlines have been sparse this morning, but there won't be a shortage of economic data today. Coming up at 8:30 a.m. ET is the Retail Sales report for September (Briefing.com consensus 0.6%), which is expected to increase for the fifth straight month but also show a leveling-off in consumer spending.
Investors will also receive Industrial Production (Briefing.com consensus 0.6%) and Capacity Utilization (Briefing.com consensus 71.9%) for September at 9:15 a.m. ET, Business Inventories for August (Briefing.com consensus 0.4%) and the preliminary Univ. of Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment for October (Briefing.com consensus 82.0) at 10:00 a.m. ET, and Net Long-Term TIC Flows for August at 4:00 p.m. ET.
Key movers ahead of the opening bell include Boeing (BA 170.80, +6.56, +4.0%) and Pfizer (PFE 37.38, +0.83, +2.3%). Boeing is up 4% on news Europe's aviation regulator approved the 737 MAX safe to fly, and Pfizer is up 2% on news it may request emergency use authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine by the end of next month.
U.S. Treasuries trade relatively unchanged ahead of today's big batch of data. The 2-yr yield is flat at 0.13%, and the 10-yr yield is flat at 0.73%. The U.S. Dollar Index is down 0.3% to 93.61. WTI crude futures are down 0.8% to $40.64/bbl.
In U.S. Corporate news:
Boeing (BA 170.80, +6.56): +4.0% after the 737 MAX was deemed safe to fly by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. The decision comes despite the company not yet implementing a software update requested by the agency.
Pfizer (PFE 37.38, +0.83): +2.3% on news it may apply for emergency use authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine by the end of next month.
J.B. Hunt Transport (JBHT 132.00, -9.84): -6.9% after missing earnings estimates, even though it beat revenue expectations.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE 10.08, +0.20): +2.0% after guiding its FY21 EPS outlook above consensus.
Schlumberger (SLB 16.25, -0.17): -1.0% after missing revenue estimates but beating EPS estimates.
